Well, I haven't been blogging quiet like I was and I'm finally ready to share why....
Over a month ago a friend let me borrow this cookbook- little did I know what can of worms had just been opened! The beginning of the book are chapters about vitamins, minerals, fats, carbs ect... I've always loved food, cooking, and nutrition, so I read it. LIFE CHANGING! This book is bases on the findings of a Dr. Price, who in the 1930's traveled the world studying the indigenous groups of the world and what they ate and why there were healthy people...
After reading I am 100% sold on the concepts. The ideas are a "back to nature" approach. Wholes grains, fruits and veggies, full fat raw milk, rich broths, and cultured dairy produces.
I've totally changed how I cook and for any one who knows me, that is a huge deal.
Out with the sugar and in with the honey!
Out with the skim denatured milk and in with the raw cream on the top kind!
Out with commercial bread with a million ingredients and in with the sourdough with 3 ingredients!
Out with canola oil and in with coconut, olive oil, and butter!
Out with the white table salt and in the with gray Celtic sea salt!
If you can't tell, I am PUMPED! It's like a light has been turned on.
Here's my book. After one night of reading I bought it ASAP.
My goal now is to eat well and as close to nature as I can. If I don't know what's in it or how it's made, we don't eat it.
Processing plays a huge role in the end product that you are eating... what makes white flour white? table salt so white? and sugar so white? It just aint natural people, and if you read about the process you wouldn't be able to feed it to your kids either... so if you don't want to make changes, avoid this book and the knowledge inside :)
My sourdough started that I call my babies and feed every night :)
Plums fresh off the tree never tasted better! Giving up processed sugar has literally transformed my taste buds. Everything tastes better!
I'll be honest... I'm an all or nothing kind of woman most of the time, and this is no different! But we aren't turning into to weirdos! I plan on eating at ward things, family things, at holidays, and the likes... I won't be packing "special" food just for us. The point is we eat so much junk every where, why have it at home too?
We still eat pizza even... just with soaked whole wheat crust, fancy fresh sauce (with beet greens hidden in it:) ) and with no nitrate pepperoni.
Food is an emotional thing for most of us... and Thomas is no different. So he made me a list of 5 things we aren't going to change... whitey white flour hasn't totally left the house!
Here is his list of things he doesn't want whole wheatalized:
biscuits
pie crust
pizza dough
tortillas
and yet to be decided....
See, I'm totally fair. But white sugar is out people. Out!
Here's to eating a little less processed and a little more down to earthy.
Read your bread bag, you'll be shocked!

I wish I could be so good. Have you found its much more expensive? I've wondered.
I am excited to see what you can add to your cooking blog with all your new knowledge!
Melissa!! I totally need to call you sometime!!! I have been thinking/incorporating some things like this into my lifestyle lately and probably should get this book!!! I have even been thinking of using agave/honey in some cake batters and such...
That's how we eat at my house, too. Even my cat gets the organic food with no ash or crazy additives. If I can't read it, it doesn't go into our bodies. Yes, it's more time consuming (though not really more expensive), but it does make a huge difference health and quality of life-wise.
I've heard the peanut butter in the bulk section of winco is pretty good. And, I found a recipe to make homemade yogurt in the crockpot! I want to try it sometime...wait a sec....maybe I got it from you?
SO Matt and I didn't read that book, but we read "In Defense of Food" which has a lot of the same concepts. It's been about a year since we changed and we feel SO much better. Eating by season, buying locally produced fruits, vegetables and meats (the commercially grown meat in American is TERRIBLE for you).....our lives have been revolutionized. Good for you! Way to be healthy!
P.S. The best thing is today at the farmer's market, I found a guy who will sell me a dozen farm eggs a week. He invited me to visit his farm and see the chickens too!!!
Keep up the healthy life. The money is totally worth the health benefits.
Sweet! Go you! I SO support healthy eating! Steve feels Thomas's pain I'm sure. We should get together! Max still talks about Macey! And I'm sure Thomas and Steve can get together and comfort each other over whole wheat muffins and tofu ;).
p.s. I am getting this book.
Now...where does chocolate fit into this little plan?
OK...I just requested that book from the library! :) I've actually been thinking a lot about this already, and am reading a book about how to make your own sourdough bread and yogurt. It's a book on food storage, but the lady says it's good to know how to do that (and to sprout your food) because you might not get live food otherwise if you're living off your food storage.
Thanks for sharing, Melissa--if I have questions, you'll be the first I call! :)
Yeah! I need to buy this! =) Thanks for sharing!
I'm excited to read the book! We've been doing the same thing too. we haven't tried the raw milk yet though. Maybe we will try it. Thanks for the heads up on the book.
